Do Jaw Deformities Adversely Affect Largemouth Bass?

چکیده
Abstract Largemouth Bass Micropterus nigricans anglers have mainly adopted catch-and-release practices with limited direct fishing mortality. However, angling could cause delayed mortality and nonlethal effects that potentially affect population dynamics. For instance, hooking can result in jaw deformities, unknown subsequent on vulnerability to angling, condition, growth, Our objectives were assess the prevalence of deformities test for differences vulnerability, size structure, fish without deformities. captured by electrofishing at 41 tournaments Brushy Creek Lake, Iowa, between April August 2015. Jaw observed 7.0% caught 3.3% while (5.8% overall). Angling recapture rates tagged (78.9%) (76.8%) similar. Condition, also results indicate little effect or survival; however, we still recommend careful handling minimize injuries may occur during angling.

Effects of Temperature on the Susceptibility of Largemouth Bass to Largemouth Bass Virus
—Temperature is an environmental variable thought to influence the susceptibility of fish to infectious diseases. This study demonstrated that juvenile largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides that were experimentally infected with largemouth bass virus (LMBV; family Iridoviridae) experienced greater mortality at 308C than at 258C. Juvenile largemouth bass were exposed to equal doses of LMBV and h...

—Microsatellite DNA variation was examined at 11 loci in five populations of Florida largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides floridanus (N 1⁄4 175) and eight populations of northern largemouth bass M. s. salmoides (N 1⁄4 249). Distinct allele frequencies with 33 private alleles between subspecies (threshold frequency, 0.05) and 19 private alleles among three geographic regions distinguished betwe...
متن کاملSub-lethal ammonia toxicity in largemouth bass.
Guidelines for ammonia toxicity in fish are often determined using static exposure tests with immature fish over a 96-h period. These results may not be relevant to aquaculture, hauling or angling tournament scenarios where mature fish can be exposed to ammonia for shorter durations, often following additional stressors such as handling. The current study sought to quantify (1) the impact of am...

Do bronchodilators adversely affect the prognosis of bronchial hyperresponsiveness? The possible adverse effects of bronchodilators on the prognosis of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) is currently a topical subject. Studies on this subject are, however, scarce. Many studies have dealt with the immediate or short term effect of bronchodilators on BHR, but to study the effects of these drugs ...
متن کاملSurvival of Foul-Hooked Largemouth Bass(Micropterus salmoides)
We conducted a field experiment to determine the survival rate of foul-hooked (hooked external to the oral cavity) largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) caught and released by recreational anglers. Of 42 largemouth bass caught with hard-plastic baits containing three treble hooks, 15 were hooked only within the mouth and 27 had at least one hook penetrating the external surface of the fish (i...
